Gross-to-net salary in Japan for five income levels: income tax, social contributions, monthly take-home pay and effective rate — plus how Japan compares with the US, UK, Germany, Japan and Korea on the same income.

Your first year in Japan feels cheap: resident tax (住民税, ~10%) is billed only from June of the second year, based on last year's income. Plan for the drop — and for a bonus culture where two "extra" payments a year make monthly figures misleading.

How deductions work in Japan

National income tax is 5–45% with a salary deduction and ¥480k basic exemption; resident tax adds ~10% with a one-year lag. Social insurance (health ~5%, pension 9.15%, employment 0.6%, plus care insurance from age 40) is split 50/50 with the employer and capped at ¥650k/month standard remuneration. A "年収 800万" offer is roughly ¥580–600k per month in hand.

Figures are estimates for a single employee with no dependents, standard deductions only, using 2025–26 rates and an approximate JPY/USD rate. They are for orientation, not tax advice — ask HR for a sample payslip for the exact number.
